Tadiran is an Israeli conglomerate that is the result of the merging of two companies, Tadir and Ran. Since the merger in the 1960s, Tadiran has become one of the leading battery manufacturers in the world and also specialises in the production of other electronics. Here, we take a closer look at the history of Tadiran and some of its most notable achievements throughout the years.

Tadiran Batteries

Since the merger in 1962, Tadiran has accumulated a range of companies now operating in a whole range of industries, including telecom, air conditioning, appliances, electronic systems, and telematics. One of their major operations is Tadiran Batteries, which has been responsible for some of the most impressive innovations in the battery industry in recent years.

Tadiran and SAFT

Over the past forty years, Tadiran has emerged as one of the leading producers of lithium batteries. Today, due to another acquisition, Tadiran Batteries is now a subsidiary of Saft Group, another huge player in the battery industry. Saft is one of the biggest producers and manufacturers of batteries in the world, and like Tadiran, they have a truly global operation.

Key achievements

While Tadiran might not be quite as popular as some of the household brands that many of us are aware of, they have achieved some remarkable milestones throughout its forty-year history. Some of the most notable achievements accredited to Tadiran include:

  • 1979 – Tadiran introduces its inaugural lithium batteries into the market. The company would go on to become one of the biggest manufacturers of lithium batteries in the world in the subsequent 30-40 years.
  • 1984 – Sonnenschein Lithium GmbH was founded as a joint venture with Tadiran in recognition of the growth the company has been enjoying in the lithium market.
  • 1995 – Tadiran installed a fully automated AA production line as a result of their successes in the battery industry, fuelling further growth throughout the nineties.
  • 2000 – Saft Group SA acquires Tadiran batteries, catapulting the company to the very top of the global battery market.
