Everyone at AceOn is buzzing with excitement for the arrival of 2023 – what we believe will materialise into The Year of the Battery.
We’re excited about 2023 for a number of reasons, but we believe this will be the year that we start to see some seismic changes in the way that people, organisations, and even governments work with batteries, primarily to store energy and to increase efficiency across a whole host of sectors and industries.
Last year, UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres called for “a global coalition on battery storage” in order to fast-track innovation and deployment.
He reiterated the fact that we have become masters at producing renewable energy but that we fall way behind when it comes to storing it for future use.
AceOn is at the forefront of battery storage technology in the United Kingdom, and we’re involved in a number of exciting projects to ensure that battery storage capacity increases in line with requirements and expectations in the near future.
In 2023, we expect to see sizeable improvements in battery storage technology in three distinct areas in the UK:
Domestic
The devastating cost of living crisis in the UK over the past twelve months has motivated many homeowners to consider renewables. Batteries can make a huge difference in the domestic solar PV market by increasing the self-consumption of solar energy from 30% to 70%, significantly reducing dependence on the grid in the process.
Capturing solar energy is just half the battle in northern Europe and storing solar energy through the winter is a big challenge that sufficient battery storage can solve. Batteries can also serve as a backup source of fuel in case of power outages or blackouts, which are likely to become more common in the near future due to increased demand.
At AceOn, we are currently working with housing associations to implement battery energy storage projects for tenants, which also has the added benefit of tackling fuel poverty, as well as the multitude of environmental benefits that come with the switch to renewables.
Specifically, 2023 is going to be a big year for our GoodWe Lynx Home U Series as we look to roll out a number of exciting projects with local authorities and housing associations in different parts of the UK.
GoodWe Lynx is a low-voltage lithium battery that has been specifically designed for residential applications, is extremely easy to install, and is super straightforward to use. The system is equipped with an IP65 protection level, and it promises to change the way that homeowners store energy at home throughout 2023.
Commercial
Of course, it’s not just British homeowners who are struggling with the cost of living crisis – business owners are feeling the pinch, too, with huge increases to the core and operational costs causing significant financial headaches.
The higher energy costs that businesses face are coupled with an expectation for them to reduce their carbon footprint, and many commercial entities are starting to feel the pressure of public expectation.
With improved battery energy storage, businesses can virtually connect their batteries to support the grid with balancing and frequency, earning and saving money at the same time. This process also offers significant improvements to the efficiency of the grid, as large consumers can switch to renewables during times of peak usage.
Off-grid
We’re now entering a time when petrol and diesel generators are no longer permitted. In fact, many public contracts and policies specify explicitly that fuel generators are not permitted for use on certain sites in an attempt to meet their climate action plans.
As a result, we are about to see a huge growth in the need for portable and mobile energy storage to serve big projects like HS2 and other significant infrastructural development initiatives that are about to be rolled out.
Helpfully, there are greener and cleaner alternatives to petrol/diesel generators, and at AceOn, we have our very own Lion-ess mobile energy storage system that is a direct replacement for diesel generators.
