BESS: An Innovative Solution to the Climate Crisis

Back to News

For the global community to successfully mitigate the climate crisis, we need more than one solution, there’s no doubt about it. But at AceOn, we take heart from the fact that a number of governments in different parts of the world now recognise the huge impact that battery energy storage systems (BESS for short) can play in turning the tide. Learn more about how BESS is an innovative solution to the climate crisis and how such systems can transform the way we engage with energy long into the future.

The general role of BESS in the climate crisis

A battery energy storage system (BESS) enables us to store renewable energy for use at a time when that energy is most required. BESS can be installed at homes, businesses, and in industrial settings around the world to improve the way that we tap into renewable energy sources. We are then able to store this energy with a BESS, reducing the amount of renewable energy that is wasted and then, crucially, reducing our dependence on the grid and the fossil fuels that power it.

Another big benefit of BESS is that these systems can be used to balance grid frequencies on a larger scale, meaning that they can be served throughout the day and night and not just during peak windows. Whether used as a front-end solution or a back-up system, a BESS also offers an alternative energy solution when we’re threatened by worsening weather. Ultimately, the role that BESS can play in the climate crisis is hugely positive and the more individuals and businesses that invest in BESS will soon realise the enormous impact of this technology.

Impressive growth predicted

One of the biggest drawbacks of BESS technology in recent times has been the cost of the units themselves, as the general cost of batteries has been high. However, the rapidly declining cost of lithium-ion batteries over the last decade (97%!) means that BESS technology is now more affordable. Crucially, this means that BESS at scale is a real possibility, particularly for governments who are keen to reduce their dependence on fossil fuels.

Further fuelling the exciting growth of BESS is a shifting perception of what we need to collectively do to tackle climate change. Blindly relying on fossil fuels for our transportation and our daily businesses is no longer acceptable. We are all required to take action to reduce our carbon footprints, and there’s no doubt that BESS can help on both a personal and commercial level. This, coupled with the reducing cost of lithium-ion batteries, is likely to accelerate the roll-out of BESS in various countries around the world.

AceON and BESS

At AceOn, we’re at the forefront of BESS technology in the UK. We have pioneered several residential energy storage projects and are soon to launch our 2.6 battery energy storage system, which comprises a 2.6kWh modular battery that increases the range and performance of our systems. We are also leading the way as far as industrial energy storage is concerned. Our partnership with MSP has enabled us to provide solutions to projects outside of traditional markets, where stable power can be scarce and investing in the right equipment is vital in providing consumers, businesses and investors with stable power grids.
