Twenty two-year-old Thomas Dilnot is bringing together his interest in engineering and a desire to find out more about how businesses are run, to excel in his business apprenticeship at AceOn.
Thomas has lived in Telford since 2008 and studied for his GCSEs and A-Levels at Haberdashers’ Adams in Newport. In August 2022 he decided to embark on a Business Administration apprenticeship with AceOn to develop his knowledge and experience in all the different aspects of operating a successful business.
Thomas said: “I chose the Business Administration apprenticeship as it’s an area I haven’t really looked into before. In the past, engineering has been the subject I have generally chosen to focus on. When the role came up at AceOn, which has a big engineering aspect attached to it, it was the best of both worlds and I felt a bit more qualified going into it.”
Since joining in the summer, Thomas says he’s enjoyed learning new things and building on the foundations of his knowledge about how companies operate – which has been pretty cool! He likes being in a family-run business and already knows where he wants to develop his skills in the future.
“I enjoy that AceOn is a smaller company. It’s nice working somewhere everyone knows everyone – it makes it easier to build relationships. I’d like to stay here after I finish my apprenticeship and maybe look at getting a CAD software qualification.”
Over the years, AceOn has provided opportunities for scores of apprentices and has always been keen to give on-the-job training and development opportunities to those who show passion and an interest in the dynamic and ever-changing world of battery manufacture and assembly.
AceOn founder and Managing Director, Mark Thompson, said: “Thomas is a smashing lad and a great addition to the office. We are giving him as many opportunities to learn about what we do and to get hands-on as we can. He’s so keen to get stuck in, we can give him any challenge and he’s up for it, like modelling a solar generation system with battery storage, which he’s been doing this week! If he completes his apprenticeship with the same enthusiasm, there’s no doubt he will go far.”
