This legislation ensures that the batteries are safe to be used in potentially hazardous situations within the European Union (EU). What does “Intrinsically safe” mean?  

The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Standard 60079-11 states that “intrinsically safe” batteries are those that do not produce sparks and release no thermal or electrical energy that could subsequently lead to ignition.  

Before being deemed as intrinsically safe, cells must be subjected to an external short-circuit test, in which all protection devices are removed. During the test, the cells must not show any signs of leaking or venting, and they can only show a very limited skin temperature increase.  

It is this level of rigorous testing that ensures the cells within our ATEX battery packs are safe for use in applications within potentially hazardous settings.  

IS battery chemistry explained 

Intrinsically safe batteries come in various chemical compositions, and you can find Li-ion, NiCad, and lithium-thionyl chloride batteries that are IS certified. The building of cells into a pack is crucial, as various factors (environment, use, life cycle, and weight) all need to be considered.
