At AceOn, we work with a number of battery manufacturers to produce customised packs for our European customers to serve a wide range of applications. And one of the market leaders in li-ion battery technology is Grepow, a Chinese company that has been manufacturing batteries for more than 25 years. In this article, we introduce you to the history of Grepowbatteries and outline the impressive growth of the Chinese battery sector in recent times.

Grepow – a Chinese superpower

Grepow – Green Power – is a battery company based in Shenzen, China, established in 1998. The main objective of Grepow is to continually produce environmentally friendly rechargeable nickel-metal hydride batteries as part of their long-term goal of replacing disposable batteries.

The company has an excellent reputation as one of the pioneers of stacking pouch cell lithium batteries, and they started the manufacturer of this versatile and widely used technology, having launched their first pouch cells in 2007. Subsequently, Grepow cells are used in various applications, including drones, agricultural plants, auto parts, and maritime devices, among others.

Today, Grepow is regarded as one of the world’s largest battery manufacturers and provides customised battery solutions to industries in Asia, Europe, and the Americas. They have four factories in China that produce more than 500,000 units of Ni-MH batteries and 500,000 Ah of Li-Polymer batteries, making them one of the world’s biggest producers of lithium-ion cells.

Grepow joins the likes of CATL and LG as a leading Asian battery producer, and their success highlights just how dominant these Asian superpowers are when it comes to manufacturing batteries at a time when demand is higher than ever.

In fact, research from 2021 shows that China’s battery production capacity accounts for approximately 70% of the world’s total. CATL alone holds around 35% of the global li-ion battery market, and other companies like Grepow further contribute to the huge market share that puts China at the forefront of battery manufacturing today.

Given the huge increase in demand for lithium-ion batteries in recent times, China’s production has experienced multiple years of double-digit growth. For instance, in 2021, the total output of li-ion batteries hit a new height of 324GWh, an increase of 106% from 2020. As more governments expedite their battery energy storage policies and look to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels, the Chinese li-ion market will only increase.

Conclusion

While CATL still leads the way in the Asian battery market, Grepow is a battery manufacturer that has a long and proud history of manufacturing outstanding li-ion technology for a range of applications. With batteries set to play a huge role in all aspects of life in the digital age going forward, there’s no doubt that Shenzen-based Grepow will continue going from strength to strength in the foreseeable future.
