Cutting edge battery technology developed in Telford will be on display at a high-profile get-together of industry experts and academics.
AceOn will be showing off its ground-breaking sodium-ion battery pack at REWED – Renewable Energy Workshop and mobile solar power energy storage system Demonstration – at the University of Wolverhampton’s Telford campus on May 4.
AceOn managing director Mark Thompson will be one of the key speakers at the free event, which is part of a collaboration between AceOn, the University of Wolverhampton, DZP Technologies and Nigerian energy company Nevadic Limited.
The project was awarded a £1 million grant from the Innovate UK Energy Catalyst 8 fund to accelerate development work on its mobile solar energy storage unit using sodium ion batteries.
The mobile solar power station uses sodium ion battery cells from Sheffield-based Faradion, and is the first technology of its kind in commercial use in sub-Saharan Africa.
Mark said: “I’m delighted to be joining so many leading researchers and developers to share ideas and knowledge about the technology which is undoubtedly going to be the future of our energy production and storage.
“It’s incredibly exciting to be involved at this early stage in development of sodium ion technology and I love the collaborative nature of the partnership – we are all very focussed on finding practical answers to our looming energy issues.
“Unlike lithium, which is scarce and depleting rapidly, sodium is low cost, sustainable and widely available, so it has the potential to revolutionise commercial battery technology.”
