The innovative SMARTGEN (Smart Renewable Energy Generation, Recharging, and Maintenance Technology) project is set to transform maritime energy solutions through wave energy and second-life EV battery systems. This groundbreaking initiative, funded by the Department for Transport’s Smart Shipping Acceleration Fund, will develop and demonstrate a pioneering renewable energy solution to support the decarbonisation of coastal shipping and green corridors.
Led by Tarus Eng Ltd. and AceOn Group pioneering businesses and organisations- Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE), Liverpool University and Newcastle University. The industrial partners SMARTGEN tackles critical challenges in maritime electrification by leveraging wave energy to charge second-life lithium-ion batteries. The project will deliver scalable, affordable, and environmentally friendly solutions for marinas and ports, addressing installation, operational, and maintenance barriers with cutting-edge digital twin technology.
A Smarter Solution for a Sustainable Maritime Future
SMARTGEN’s core innovation is its ability to store fluctuating wave energy in AceOn’s advanced battery systems, enabling both DC and AC energy distribution for small and medium-sized vessels. This approach reduces emissions, improves air and water quality, and lowers noise pollution while promoting biodiversity.
Key objectives include:
· Wave Energy Generation and Charging Systems: Development of efficient and reliable systems for vessels at marinas, ports, and green corridors.
· Prognostic Health Monitoring: Integration of digital twin technology for optimal performance and maintenance.
· Environmental and Economic Impact: Evaluation of emission reductions, lifecycle cost analysis, and socio-economic benefits.
· Real-world Demonstration: Case studies at Newcastle Marina and Grimsby Port to validate feasibility and scalability.
